This enables him to suggest techniques for neutralising hostile media coverage – a key factor in successful crisis communications management since the media almost always escalate problems and issues when they think there is a ‘good story’ to uncover.

Adrian writes about the predicament of spokespeople and professional communicators with understanding: as chairman of his own trade association, the PRCA, he regularly appeared on TV and radio to defend the association and individual members against critical media attention.

The book stresses the importance of preparation – ‘being crisis-ready’ and in particular the vital role of spokespeople, who should be trained, rehearsed and capable of responding to a crisis within an hour – confident, credible, calm and – above all – human. Demonstrating empathy under pressure is not easy. Few people can do it without practice. But it’s essential – most stakeholders care little about the details of a crisis but they care a lot about the performance of the spokesperson.

‘Crisis Communications Management’ contains numerous real-life examples and handy check-lists, together with a set of practical exercises – ‘What would we have done?’ - to help readers examine their own probable reactions and the condition of their own crisis defences.

To purchase your copy of this guide, please click here. This will assure the future stability of the SI and open the opportunity for the use of new technologies, including quantum technologies, to implement the definitions.

The changes, which will come into force on 20th May 2019, will bring an end to the use of physical objects to define measurement units.

The definition of the kilogram for more than 130 years, the International Prototype of the Kilogram (IPK), a cylinder of a platinum alloy stored at the BIPM in France, will now be retired. It will be replaced by the Planck constant – the fundamental constant of quantum physics. While the stability of the IPK could only be confirmed by comparisons with identical copies, a difficult and potentially inaccurate process, the Planck constant is ready for use everywhere and always.

The new definitions impact four of the seven base units of the SI: the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole, and all units derived from them, such as the volt, ohm and joule.

- The kilogram – will be defined by the Planck constant (h)

- The ampere – will be defined by the elementary electrical charge (e)

- The kelvin – will be defined by the Boltzmann constant (k)

- The mole – will be defined by the Avogadro constant (NA)

Although the size of these units will not change (a kilogram will still be a kilogram), the four redefined units will join the second, the metre and the candela to ensure that the set of SI base units will continue to be both stable and useful. The revised SI will maintain its relevance by facilitating technical innovations. Just as the redefinition of the second in 1967 provided the basis for technology that has transformed how we communicate across the globe, through GPS and the internet, the new changes will have wide-reaching impact in science, technology, trade, health and the environment, among many other sectors.

Download the briefing document issued by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) on the impact of this change.

If you have any questions please contact NPL at measurement_services@npl.co.uk

If you want to read more, then go to the NPL website: www.npl.co.uk/measure/

Wed, 21 Nov 2018 08:54:42 GMT/4d4:80/News/international-system-of-units-overhauled-in-historic-vote CMA sends tough message to business cheats with cartel campaign http://www.baidu.com/4d4:80/News/cma-sends-tough-message-to-business-cheats-with-cartel-campaign
The CMA is calling for more whistle-blowers to expose business cartels with the launch of a national awareness campaign.

It comes as new research shows many firms don’t know enough about how to comply with competition law.

The Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) latest cartel awareness campaign aims to educate businesses about which practices are illegal and urges people to come forward if they suspect a business has taken part in cartel behaviour, such as fixing prices or rigging contracts.

ICM research released by the CMA today to coincide with the campaign shows that out of amongst 1,000 companies surveyed:

•only 57% knew it was illegal to fix prices

•nearly half either didn’t know or thought it was legal to discuss prices with competing bidders when quoting for new work (23% said ‘don’t know’, and 25% actually thought it was legal)

•significantly more than half (59%) didn’t know or thought that dividing up and sharing customers with rivals was legal (24% said ‘don’t know’ and 35% actually thought it was legal)

Howard Cartlidge, Senior Director of Cartels at the CMA, said:

“Businesses that fix prices or rig contracts are breaking the law and ripping people off.

“The victims are customers and other businesses, who are getting cheated out of a fair deal.

“We know that the vast majority of businesses want to do the right thing, but pleading ignorance simply isn’t good enough. Today’s campaign makes it easy to find out the facts.

“If you know of something illegal – do the right thing and tell us about it.”

The campaign is targeting industries including construction, manufacturing, recruitment, estate agents and property management and maintenance. These are sectors identified as particularly susceptible to cartels. Previous campaigns have driven a 30% rise in the number of tip-offs to the CMA’s cartels hotline.

The campaign uses simple imagery on social media sites and a dedicated website and comes as the CMA continues to step up its enforcement action. Since April 2015 it has issued over £155 million in fines following investigations into anti-competitive practices and it is currently investigating 15 cases including in construction services, roofing materials and estate agency.

Examples of CMA action include:

•Two of the biggest suppliers of charcoal and coal for households in the UK were fined £3.4 million for taking part in a market sharing cartel.

•Water tank firms were fined over £2.6 million, after they formed a cartel to divide up customers, fix minimum prices and share commercially sensitive information for tanks used in large construction projects (such as schools and hospitals).

•Somerset estate agents were fined over £370,000 for fixing minimum commission rates, such that local home owners had been denied a fair deal when selling their property. The CMA also secured the disqualification of 2 company directors in this case.

•An Amazon Marketplace seller was fined over £160,000 and its director disqualified from running a company after agreeing to fix the prices of popular posters and frames with a competitor.

Notes to editors

1.Businesses found to have been involved in illegal cartels can be fined up to 10% of their annual turnover. Individuals can face up to 5 years in prison and directors can be disqualified from holding director positions for up to 15 years. These can be reduced or eliminated altogether where a business or individual report their involvement in a cartel and co-operates fully with the CMA’s investigation. Witnesses who blow the whistle can receive a reward of up to £100,000.

2.The CMA has published results from an ICM survey of 1,201 businesses, which includes breakdowns by region and sector.

3.The campaign encourages people to visit the CMA’s designated ‘Stop Cartels’ page which features videos, short guides and case studies to explain what cartels are and how people can report them.

4.If you have witnessed a cartel or have been involved in a cartel and wish to apply for leniency, call: 0203 738 6888 (witnessed); 0203 738 6833 (leniency). In particular, UKAS welcomed the Government’s confirmation of its intention to seek to ensure that ‘manufacturers should only need to undergo one series of tests in either market’ and that there is a ‘jointly agreed accreditation framework to provide mutual assurance that UK and EU conformity assessments are robust’. Thus, confirming their understanding of the need for mutual recognition of accreditation and conformity assessment in any trade agreement with the EU.

More recently, the Government has published a number of Technical Notices on the implications for the UK if agreement is not reached with the EU by 29 March 2019, including one on Trading goods regulated under the ‘New Approach’. The Notice confirms that, under a ‘No Deal’ scenario, UKAS’ role as the National Accreditation Body would remain as now and also sets out proposed arrangements for those organisations currently operating as UK Notified Bodies. The notice makes clear that reaching agreement with the EU before 29th March 2019 remains the desired and expected outcome and UKAS fully supports the work the Government is doing to achieve that outcome.

To that end, UKAS continues to work closely across Government, particularly the Departments for Business, Energy, Industrial Strategy, Exiting the EU and International Trade to ensure that the key objectives for conformity assessment and accreditation are fully understood. These are that:

• UKAS’ recognition as the UK National Accreditation Body continues post Brexit.

• UKAS continues as a member of EA, ILAC and IAF to safeguard the European and international recognition of accreditation and accredited services.

• There is continued access to UK based notified bodies, or other mutually recognised bodies, to provide conformity assessment required by EU legislation.

• Mutual recognition of conformity assessment is factored into any new trade agreement between the UK and the EU.

• Accreditation is given due recognition in any new international trade agreements that emerge

Good progress has been made on all these objectives and UKAS now awaits the outcome of the UK/EU negotiations with great interest.

Further information about UKAS’ preparations for Brexit are available on the UKAS website.
Mon, 15 Oct 2018 11:47:20 GMT/4d4:80/News/ukas-welcomes-brexit-white-paperWellness Newsletter from Miles Smith Insurance Grouphttp://www.baidu.com/4d4:80/News/wellness-newsletter-from-miles-smith-insurance-group

An informative newsletter you can give to your members to help them implement wellness initiatives within their workplace, no matter what size of company or the industry they operate in!

Mon, 24 Sep 2018 11:06:37 GMT/4d4:80/News/wellness-newsletter-from-miles-smith-insurance-groupHow UKAS accreditation can help Trade Associations and their Membershttp://www.baidu.com/4d4:80/News/how-ukas-accreditation-can-help-trade-associations-and-their-members
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the national accreditation body for the UK. It operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government through the Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and is a non-profit-distributing company limited by guarantee.

UKAS accreditation determines the technical competence and integrity of organisations that offer conformity assessment services such as testing, certification, inspection and calibration in accordance with internationally agreed standards. In short, UKAS ‘checks the checkers’ and it allows organisations to demonstrate their competence, impartiality and performance capability so that users can have confidence in the outcome.

UKAS' involvement in international groups such as EA, IAF and ILAC, provides for mutual recognition, which means that UKAS accreditation is recognised globally.

This reduces the need for multiple assessments of suppliers, and consequently helps to reduce barriers to trade for organisations who have UKAS accreditation.

UKAS accredits over 3000 organisations, operates in over 17 industry sectors and is recognised by over 100 economies around the globe. UKAS accreditation is a tool that is proven to deliver universal confidence in management and trading standards, and provides supply chain confidence. Furthermore, Government regularly acknowledges that accredited standards and schemes driven by industry are an acceptable alternative to legislation and provides a way to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements.

Accredited testing, inspection and certification are increasingly being specified by Regulators, and public and private sector organisations. Accredited testing, inspection and certification carried out in compliance with best practices can limit product failure and down time, and control manufacturing costs.
